Harrison has enjoyed creating art since he was little, but Harrison was born with a genetic disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy that affects his muscle strength and has led to weakness in his whole body, including his arms and hands. This has made making art with physical art supplies difficult. Luckily, we live in a time of technologies that open the world of creating to all abilities.
Harrison uses the art program Procreate to draw with a variety of “brush” styles and colors by using his fingers instead of having to struggle with holding different drawing tools. He is able to use the zoom and swipe functions on his iPad to move his canvas where he needs to draw instead of relying on arm strength and his limited reach.
Some of these pieces have taken Harrison hours to create and consist of many layers of colors, textures and lines. Harrison is drawn to bright colors and enjoys the contrast of bright against dark or vise versa. He loves combining geometric design with organic shapes.
Harrison is 12 years old and when he is not making art, he enjoys playing video games, watching videos about video games, playing with his animals and playing music on his iPad.
